What Is RTP?

Free-to-play guide · in-game coins only, no real money.

RTP stands for return to player. It's a percentage that describes how much of everything played on a slot game is paid back as wins, averaged over a very large number of spins, think millions.

A simple example

A game with a 96% RTP will, over millions of spins by many players, pay back about 96 coins for every 100 coins played. The other 4% is the "house edge". That doesn't mean you'll get 96 back from 100 coins in one session. In a short session you might finish well above or well below that figure. RTP only describes the long run.

Why RTP is a long-term number

Each spin is random. Over a few hundred spins, luck dominates. Only over a vast number of spins does the average settle close to the stated RTP. This is the same reason a coin can land heads five times in a row even though it's 50/50 in the long run.

RTP vs volatility

Two games can have exactly the same RTP and feel completely different. One may pay small wins very often; the other may pay rarely but in big bursts. That difference is volatility. RTP tells you "how much on average", volatility tells you "how bumpy the ride is".

Where to find a game's RTP

Many games show it in the pay table or help screen. Some games offer several RTP settings that the operator chooses. If a figure isn't shown, you can't assume it.

Does RTP matter in Slotupia?

In Slotupia's free tournaments you play with in-game coins only and nothing is ever paid in money, so RTP is really about game feel. In a short timed match, volatility usually matters more for your ranking than a small difference in RTP. A higher-RTP game may help you keep a steadier coin balance through a long match, while a high-volatility game gives you a chance at a big late jump.

Questions

What is a good RTP?

Many modern slot games sit around 94–97%. Remember it's a long-run average and doesn't predict a single session.

Is RTP the chance of winning?

No. RTP is the average share of coins returned over millions of spins, not how often a spin wins.
