Paylines and Ways to Win

Free-to-play guide · in-game coins only, no real money.

A slot win only counts when matching symbols line up in a pattern the game recognises. There are a few common systems, and the pay table always tells you which one a game uses.

Fixed paylines

Classic games use paylines: set paths across the reels, straight lines, V-shapes, zig-zags. A three-reel classic may have just 1 or 5 lines; a five-reel video game often has 10, 20, 25 or 50. Matching symbols must usually land left to right, starting on reel 1, along one of those lines.

Adjustable paylines

Some games let you choose how many lines are active. Fewer lines use fewer coins per spin but give fewer ways to win. In tournaments, most players keep all lines active and adjust the coin size instead.

Ways to win (243, 1024)

"Ways" games drop fixed lines. A win counts whenever matching symbols land on adjacent reels from left to right, in any row. On a 5x3 grid that gives 3×3×3×3×3 = 243 ways; on a 5x4 grid, 4⁵ = 1,024 ways. Wins are frequent but often small.

Variable reels (Megaways-style)

Some games change the number of symbols on each reel every spin, so the number of ways changes too, sometimes into the hundreds of thousands. These tend to be high volatility.

Cluster pays

Grid games pay when a group of matching symbols touch each other horizontally or vertically, often 5 or more. Winning symbols may disappear and new ones drop in ("cascades"), allowing chain wins from one spin.

Pay both ways

A few games count wins left-to-right and right-to-left, roughly doubling the chances of a line win.

How wins add up

If several lines or ways win on the same spin, their payouts are added together. Wilds can complete wins on multiple lines at once, which is why they're so valuable. See bonus features.

Which system suits tournaments?

Ways and cluster games produce lots of small wins, good for building a steady score. Fixed-line games with big multipliers produce rarer, larger wins, useful for catching up. Match your choice to the volatility you want.

All of this applies to Slotupia's free games with in-game coins only. More terms are in the glossary.

Questions

What does 243 ways to win mean?

On a 5-reel, 3-row grid, matching symbols on adjacent reels in any position count, giving 3⁵ = 243 combinations.

Should I play all paylines?

In most games yes; it gives the most chances to win per spin. Adjust coin size to control how fast you use coins.
