The History of the Slot Machine: From the Liberty Bell to Your Phone
· Slotupia Team · Slots Culture & Responsible Play

Before the slot machine
In the late 1800s, coin-operated poker machines appeared in American bars. They used drums with playing cards, and prizes were often drinks or cigars paid by the bartender.
The Liberty Bell
Around the 1890s, Charles Fey, a mechanic in San Francisco, built the Liberty Bell: three reels and five symbols (horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts and a cracked bell). Three bells paid the top prize, and the machine paid automatically. Its basic design influenced slot machines for decades.
Fruit machines
When gambling machines faced restrictions in parts of the United States, some machines paid out in chewing gum and sweets, and fruit symbols such as cherries, lemons and plums appeared. The BAR symbol is often linked to the Bell-Fruit Gum Company logo. In Britain, slot-style games are still called fruit machines.
Electromechanical slots
In 1963, Bally released Money Honey, an electromechanical machine with an automatic hopper that could pay large numbers of coins. Electrical parts made bigger, more varied games possible, and the side lever gradually became decoration.
Video slots
In the mid-1970s, video slot machines replaced physical reels with a screen. That freed designers to add more reels, more lines and bonus screens.
Random number generators
Microprocessors brought the random number generator, which decides each result in software. That allowed far more possible outcomes and led to the features we know today.
Online and mobile
From the 1990s, slot games moved online, and then to phones. Social casino games appeared, letting people play slot-style games for fun with virtual coins.
Browser games and tournaments
Today, games like Slotupia run in a browser with no download. Tournaments add a social, competitive layer: equal coins, a timer and a live leaderboard.
What has not changed
A row of matching symbols and the suspense of the reels slowing down. The Liberty Bell's spirit lives on in every classic game.

The one-armed bandit
Early machines were nicknamed "one-armed bandits" because of the side lever and the way they took coins. The lever survives today as a design touch on many digital games.
Jackpots through history
Early machines paid small fixed prizes. Electromechanical hoppers allowed bigger payouts, and linked machines later made large progressive jackpots possible. Today's in-game jackpots in free games keep the drama without money.
Slots in Africa
Slot machines and betting shops spread across many African countries in recent decades, and mobile phones have brought slot-style games to millions. Free-to-play games offer the entertainment without the financial risk.
